About Us
Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) is a pioneering and legally mandated institution established for the peaceful use, promotion, development and advancement of atomic energy in the country. It was established in the early 1960s in a small laboratory in Dhaka to study the agricultural and BAEC began its endeavors through research on the peaceful use of nuclear energy in medicine. The Commission first initiated institutional research activities—both theoretical and experimental—in nuclear physics with the establishment of the Atomic Energy Centre, Dhaka, in 1964. Subsequently, the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission was established in February 1972 through “President’s Order No. 15.” Later, “President’s Order No. 15” was replaced by the “Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission Act, 2017.”
Since its inception, the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission has been conducting multifaceted research and service-oriented activities for the welfare of the people. These activities involve the promotion of nuclear science and technology—as well as the peaceful application and use of nuclear energy—across various sectors such as public health, food, agriculture, education, and industry. The specific areas in which the Commission carries out its research and services include nuclear medicine, radioactivity monitoring, health physics, and radioactive waste management, Radioisotopes and Radiopharmaceuticals, Secondary Standard Dosimetry, Material Characterization, Tissue Banking and Biomaterial Development, Radiation-based Food Preservation, Food Safety and Food Security, Environment fields of activity include pollution, polymer processing, characterization of trace elements, agrochemical residues, isotope hydrology, elemental analysis using particle accelerators, chemical analysis, electronics, etc. The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission holds the distinction of installing the first IBM mainframe computer in Bangladesh, which was set up at the Atomic Energy Centre, Dhaka.
The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission is the country’s largest scientific research organization. The Commission conducts its diverse research and service-oriented activities through various institutions spread across the country—such as the Atomic Energy Research Establishment, (AERE), Savar; Atomic Energy Centre, Dhaka (AECD); National Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (NINMAS); Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS); Atomic Energy Centre, Chattogram (AECC); Beach Sand Minerals Exploitation Centre; and Radiation Testing and Monitoring Laboratory (RTML), Mongla.
